Will Your Christmas Ring or Watch Need Sizing?

Well, Christmas is almost here and of course I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

It's been a busy season here in our jewelry store as we've served as Santa's unofficial elves. Its a true pleasure to help everyone pick out a beautiful piece of jewelry to honor their loved ones this season!

As a reminder, if you or a loved one receives a ring or watch that may need some form of adjustment...we will be open the day after Christmas to help those who need ring sizings or watch band adjustments even if they didn't purchase the item from us!

Most repair/adjustment work is done in our store (some while you wait if possible) so don't let that new present sit around, bring it by for the adjustment you need to make it wearable and start enjoying it today!

Lets Have A Vintage Christmas!

One of the most popular jewelry styles this year for rings, pendants and earrings is the "Vintage Look"! This timeless and classic style is being seen on the red carpet in Hollywood as well as in your local town.

This style of jewelry recalls the years from 1900-1920 when "Art Deco & Art Noveau" was popular. One of the great things about this style of jewelry is simply that it never goes "out of style"...there will always be those who love it!

Everyday, I notice young ladies coming in wanting this type of jewelry, especially in engagement rings and I have just have to think that they're grandma's would be so proud.....

Jewelry in the "Vintage Look" is often charaterized by what is called micro pave' bead work setting which is a very intricate type of work performed by an expert goldsmith. There are also many diamonds found in the piece...notice the diamonds surrounding the center stone in the two pictures above! I like to think of this look as having an almost "sandy or grainy" type of look.

You'll be glad to know that this style is made in both yellow & white gold as well as platinum and palladium metals, so the choices are plenty!

I invite you to check out this link: http://www.hudsongoldmine.com/Jewelry_Specials.php
where you'll find many more pieces in the "Vintage Look"!

Let this Christmas bring you back to the look of yesteryear...you'll see why its been so popular for soooo long!

Merry Christmas,

Let The Journey Begin This Christmas!

This Christmas, let your journey begin with the gorgeous and popular "Journey Diamond Pendant"! Women everywhere are clamouring for this stunning pendant which comes in various diamond weights from .25 carat to 1.00 carat or more.

The idea behind Journey Diamond Pendants starts with a smaller diamond at top with larger diamonds graduating all the way to the bottom. She'll love it when you explain to her that "With Each Step, Your Love Grows" with the graduated diamonds!

Yes, they are available as pictured in white gold but also come in yellow gold as well. The pendant pictured is just one (this one is the "S" shape) but they are several other designs as well to choose from.

If you're not sure what to get the special woman in your life this holiday season, I strongly suggest this lovely item...you can bet she's seen her friends with it and yes, it goes well as an ensemble to all other jewelry styles and can be worn for everday occasions as well as out on the town!

Make this Christmas an unforgettable one with "The Journey Diamond Pendant"!

CITRINE - The November Birthstone

Let's suppose that someone has bought a moped, yet his friends and acquaintances keep talking about his 'wonderful racing machine'. He surely feels confused, or feels that they are taking the mickey out of him. A moped was exactly what he wanted for short trips in good weather, but even the salesman said that he was now in possession of a 'real flyer'.That's roughly how things go with the citrine, the stone for the month of November.

Many people have come to know and love this stone under the name gold topaz, or Madeira or Spanish topaz, although in actual fact it has very little in common with the higher-quality gemstone topaz - except for a few nuances of colour. Thus the history of the citrine is closely interwoven with that of the topaz, and coincides with it completely when it comes to the interpretation of alleged miraculous powers. However, the citrine is a member of the large quartz family, a family which, with its multitude of colours and very various structures, offers gemstone lovers almost everything their hearts desire in terms of adornment and decoration, from absolutely clear rock crystal to black onyx. And it does so at prices which are by no means unaffordable. The name is derived from the colour - the yellow of the lemon - , although the most sought-after stones have a clear, radiant yellowish to brownish red.

Like all crystal quartzes, the citrine has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and is thus, to a large extent, insensitive to scratches. It won't immediately take offence at being knocked about either, since its cleavage properties are non-existent. Even if their refractive index is relatively low, the yellow stones have just that mellow, warm tone that seems to have captured the last glow of autumn. Like golden Rhine wine or sparkling Madeira, heavy and sweet, citrine jewellery shimmers and brings a hint of sunshine to those dull November days. There are not many yellow gemstones in the world of jewels. A diamond or a sapphire may be yellow - those will be expensive -, or sometimes a tourmaline or chrysoberyl, though these tend toward green somewhat, a golden beryl or eben a pure topaz, which we will mention again later on. However, the citrine fulfils everyone's colour wishes, from lemon yellow to reddish brown.

Rare though it is, yellow does in fact occur in quartz in Nature, if seldom, when there are traces of iron in the silicon dioxide. Historically, it has been found in Spain, on the Scottish island of Arran, in France, Hungary and in several mines overseas. Perhaps the citrine wouldn't have been talked about any more at all if, in the middle of the 18th century, it had not been for the discovery that amethysts and smoky quartzes can also be rendered yellow by so-called burning. This heat treatment at temperatures of between 470 and 560 degrees has to be carried out very carefully and requires a great deal of experience. However, in the course of 200 years, its application has become so much a matter of course that most of the stones available in the trade today are in fact burnt amethysts or smoky quartzes. Only a trained specialist can recognise the signs of heat treatment at all, burnt stones having subtle stripes whilst the yellow of natural ones is cloudy.

I invite you to stop by the Gold Mine today to see this spectacular November birthstone, "The Citrine". Our citrine is set in many exotic and beautiful pendants, earrings and rings sure to please in prices to suit everyone's budget!

The Gold Mine Debuts "Caldwell Time Company Watches"

I am pleased to announce the debut of a new private label watch brand from The Gold Mine called, "Caldwell Time Company"!

Here in the pictures you will see three examples of how beautiful these lovely new watches are...

How did "Caldwell Time Company Watches" come into being? While thinking about my love for fine quality time pieces, it occured to me that it would be really cool if I could develop a watch line honoring Caldwell County's (our county) heritage. I also wanted a watch line that people would feel proud to wear and call their own. So, I approached a major watch manufacturer of fine quality timepieces and parts and asked if they would be interested in partnering with my store to develop a new watch line that would be available on a limited basis only at our store. Surprisingly, they said yes and "Caldwell Time Co." was born! After going through the process of picking and designing over 40 styles of watches and coming up with something that young as well as mature adults would like....we finally arrived.

This past week we were pleased to get our complete shipment of watches....and the results were breathtaking to say the least! Get this, where most watch companies only use glass watch crystals....we used an actual gemstone, white sapphire for the crystal which is second in hardness only to diamond...so you'll have a very durable crystal that is scratch resistant. The watch movements are made in Switzerland, where the finest timepieces of our day comes from. The watches are then painstakingly assembled and tested for quality assurance here in the good 'ole USA.

I personally believe in the design and workmanship of these watches so much that I'm guaranteeing them against defect of working movement parts for five years...yes, five years! And for extra added bonus, when a "Caldwell Time Company" watch is purchased, we will give you a lifetime battery replacement deal as well......so, you'll never have to worry about paying for the changing and installation of a watch battery again. These watches with proper care and cleaning every 3-5 years, will last a lifetime and are sure to become treasured family heirlooms.

I invite you to stop by The Gold Mine to take a look at this latest, exciting addition to our inventory and maybe soon you'll be "Livin' On Caldwell Time"!! Visit our website for more info on these lovely watches at:

"Opal" The October Birthstone

Opals.......a beautiful gemstone that invokes all the colors of the rainbow. This lovely gem is also the official October birthstone. I must admit that opal really is one of my favorite gemstones because of their peculiar "Play of Color". Play of color in opal is the result of water being retained by silicon dioxide thereby producing a rainbow of different colors.

Opals come in many body shades, the one pictured shows a blue shade but you will also see white, black and gray body shades as well.

The more play of color or rainbow effect an opal has, the more sought after and valueable it will be. Black opals with lots of red flashes are highly sought after gemstones and fetch a nice price on the market. Opals are normally cut in what is called a cabochon or flat rounded type of cut. They may come in oval, square, round or most any shape a cutter desires but they are usually in flat cabochons. Some opals, such as the tangy orange mexican fire opal may be faceted like a diamond or other gemstones. This lovely gems are predominately found in Australia, and the US.

In caring for your opals or opal jewelry please remember to not wear them when you are being extremely physical as they are fragile & soft. Do not clean an opal in regular jewelry cleaner which could result in unrepairable damage to the stone. Opals should only be clean with soap and water and dried on a soft cloth. From time to time, it is also a good idea to rub your opal with a bit of baby or mineral oil to help it retain the moisture inside which makes it so pretty! Treat your precious opal jewelry as you would a baby, with love and care and you'll get many years of enjoyment!

I hope you have enjoyed the information provided on this gorgeous gemstone. Maybe it is or isn't your birthstone, but there is no reason you can't enjoy beautiful opal jewelry anytime!

Vacation Time? Its Also Jewelry Checkup Time!

Are you ready for a great July 4th vacation? Ready to make some wonderful family memories? As July 4th vacations loom just around the corner, let me suggest you take time to have your valued jewelry checked before leaving out!
Why should I have my jewelry checked & inspected? Simple....myself and most of my fellow jewelers notice a surge of jewelry repairs right after everyone returns from their summer vacations. Often times, many a vacation has been ruined because a prized ring came back with a diamond or gemstone missing which leads to a very expensive jewelry repair! Take a few minutes and stop by today to have your jewelry professionally cleaned and inspected for stone tightness. It doesn't cost anything and it might just save you an expensive repair bill down the line!
I also say that its a good idea to have your jewelry checked every 3 to 6 months just to make sure that a prong isn't broken or bent on your ring or that you've developed a weak area in your bracelet, necklace, earrings, rings, etc. Even if your item needs a minor repair, it surely is less expensive doing preventive maintenance than doing a major stone replacement or repair.
So go ahead, make plans for that wonderful family time you so richly deserve but remember, an ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure in your jewelry's care!

Swimming Pools & Jewelry Don't Mix!

Yes, its true....regardless of what you may have been told in the past, its never a good idea to wear your gold jewelry into the swimming pool! But why you may ask? Its always so shiny when I get out of the pool!!! Ahhh yes, but what you may not realize is that the chlorine chemicals used in most swimming pools is very much like acid on the gold your jewelry is made of!

Prove it you may say! Ok, I will! Sometime ago, I took a piece of scrap 14k gold and submerged it into a jar of chlorox, much like you'd use in your washing machine and also much like the chlorine chemicals added to your pool. The results were staggering...in little over a week and a half...it was gone! Disappeared!

What had happened to it? The gold was attacked chemically by the chlorine in the bleach and ate it away, much like an acid! Now I must admit, my little experiment was probably to the extreme but needless to say, gold and chlorine/chlorox should never mix!

So go ahead, wear your white or yellow gold jewelry into the pool this summer...it may even look shiny when you get out...but you'll be coming in soon to see me to repair it when little holes & pits start appearing in your jewelry...and guess what? Many times a piece of jewelry that has been exposed to the chemicals in your pool cannot be repaired because they have been weakened so much by the exposure.

I hope you found this little known jewelry tip enlightening....take heed and take your jewelry off before entering the pool...it will save you money later!

Custom Jewelry Creation Anyone?

Clients often ask me what I enjoy most about being a jeweler and my answer simply is, "Custom Creation"! Nothing in my store is quite as fun as making a new piece of jewelry for a client that only they will ever own and enjoy!

What does custom creating a new jewelry item entail and how do you go about it? Many times, I've had clients bring in an idea for a new ring or pendant that was simply scribbled on a napkin at a restaurant and guess what? We were able to make it for them! Whatever your idea is, simply stop by or call me and maybe I can help you design a "Mock Up" piece or image for you to view on my computer or by creating what is known as a wax casting. This way, you can see beforehand what your idea will look like and whether or not you'll like it! We can easily design rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets or whatever you like out of such metals as platinum, 10k, 14k, 18k, or 22k white or yellow gold, sterling silver and even titanium!

I've enclosed a link to some of my recent jewelry creations for your viewing at: http://www.hudsongoldmine.com/Custom_Creations.php

These items are only a few of the pieces we've made here at The Gold Mine. Let your imagination be your guide and then call us so we can help you own the jewelry you've always dreamed about and deserve!

Everyone does like a party don't they? Sure they do! This friday night, May 4th from 6pm 'til 8pm, we're going to have a party here in my store, "The Gold Mine"!

What kind of party? Well for starters, my lovely wife Angie will have her famous "Chocolate Fountain" on display that you can dip fruit, cookies, crackers..(sorry, don't dip your finger)! The atmosphere will be light and soft music playing, just a gathering of friends and my best customers to show them whats new in the jewelry industry for mom...Hey, Mother's Day is almost here (May 13th)...I gotta help these folks get ready!

Nothing quite makes an impression on Mom (other than you visiting or calling her once and awhile) like fine jewelry! I've got to say that this year's new spring jewelry collection we've assembled is one of the best ever!

Also, we have a closeout jewelry case of some old friends(jewelry) that we'd like to move so we've marked them down at or below our actual cost to give them a good adoptive home!

Hey Guy's...How About "Wife Insurance"!

So gentlemen, do you "Want To Get Out of the Doghouse?" If so, I recommend treating that special woman in your life to a beautiful piece of fine jewelry from time to time!

Seriously, think of a woman's jewelry to her as you would think of your favorite item, example: fishing boat, hunting rifle, sports cars, motorcycles...you get the picture?

It really is quite inexpensive compared to some of the items we men hold dear and trust me...women treasure their jewelry for years to come!

When that special occasion rolls around, fine jewelry really is a hit! The gift we men give our spouses or girlfriends says "A Lot" about how we truly feel toward our special loved one...so remember this when you're picking out that "Just Right" item for her....don't try to get out on the cheap...go ahead and go for the gusto....it'll be the best "Wife Insurance" you've ever purchased!

What is the "Perfect Diamond Engagement Ring?"

What is the "Perfect Diamond Engagement Ring?" Wow...what a question...you know what they say about different strokes for different folks! Let me attempt to shed some light on the subject...

First of all, what shape of diamond do you prefer? You have several options to choose from such as the traditional round brilliant, emerald cuts, princess/square cuts, radiant cut, pear shape, marquise, heart shape and the list goes on and on. With today's modern diamond cutters, there are many diamond shapes to choose from whereas brides to be of yesteryear only had 6-7 choices. Take in to consideration your hand & finger size...longer hands and fingers tend to look best with marquise or emerald cut shapes...shorter hand & finger size looks best with round or princess cut shapes. Of course, its all a matter of personal taste!

Second, look for a diamond that is well cut! Some diamond cutters sacrifice good cutting for size and the end result is a diamond that looks like a piece of glass instead of the brilliant prism that it should! Always go for good quality cutting!

Third, look for a diamond of good clarity or how clear the diamond is. There are several clarity grades to choose from but I often suggest to clients that in layman's terms...look for a diamond that has lots of fire, not one that looks cloudy or milky in appearance! Myself or any knowledgeable jeweler will take time with you to explain all about clarity grades when you make this all important purchase!

Fourth, look for a diamond that has a fine white color? Don't all diamonds have that you say? Not necessarily, because some diamonds have a faint to very noticeable yellow tone. Insist on the finer white diamond grades.

Fifth...what type of setting is best? With so many to choose from: 14k, 18k gold, platinum, palladium....each has its on personality and good qualities..please let a trained person explain it to you. Some ladies like ultra modern and highly polished settings while others love the current favorite" The Vintage Look". Take a look at the vintage ring I have pictured as an example. There isn't a right or wrong...let your good taste be your guide!

Success,

You know, Mother's Day is only a short while away and as I was thinking of the perfect Mother's Day gift, "The Diamond Circle of Love" pendant came to mind!

Why would you choose a diamond circle pendant you might ask? Simple, the diamond circle pendant represents unbroken, unending love! What more could you say to your mother who gave you life, taught you values, fed you, clothed you (you get the picture)...than by saying "I Love You" with this beautiful pendant!

Diamond circles come in both white & yellow gold with a variety of chains & lengths and most importantly...they are very fashionable and go with absolutely everything....mom is going to love it and she'll really love the one who give it! This item is the type of jewelry that has become a staple in many a mom's wardrobe and will become a priceless treasured jewelry heirloom to be passed on from generation to generation.

Lets not forget you men...once you've given this lovely item to your wife or mom, she'll not only wear it with great pride, but she'll also let everyone know "YOU" thought enough of her to give this lovely gift. Journey Jewelry - Fad or Fashion?

By now, I'm sure many if not most of you have heard of the new "Journey Jewelry" collection which has appeared in many magazines, tv ads, etc. Debeers and the Diamond Promotional Service are really pushing this new product. What is it you might ask?

Journey Jewelry is simply a diamond pendant or earrings with 5 or more stones that start small and slowly graduate to a larger stone size. These items come in either a straight bar style or a squiggly "S" design which so far has been the most popular.

Fad or true fashion? I think because of its clean design and a look that goes well with other jewelry, Journey jewelry items will become a part of staple jewelry item in the industry much as 3 stone past, present, future has. By the way, "Journey" jewelry is a natural extension of the past, present & future concept!

Whether your tastes are white or yellow gold, there are currently several items in the Journey Jewelry collection to fit everyone's tastes. Customers are asking for it here at The Gold Mine and even though the line is only 3-4 months old at this point, its popularity hasn't even begun to peak. By Christmas 2007, I predict that "Journey Diamond Jewelry" will be a very requested item along with the ever popular diamond stud earrings, 3 stone jewelry and diamond circles.

If you have questions about Journey Jewelry, I invite you to call me at (828) 726-1009. For a FREE informational catalog & brochure on the latest "Journey Diamond" styles, just drop me an email with your mailing address at: goldman86@bellsouth.net

You Gotta Love "The Jewelry Business"!!!

You know as I was sitting here thinking about what to post, I realized how much I love this business! Where else can you go that everyday you simply don't know what's gonna happen next?

I mean...this morning, I had no idea I would be doing 7 appraisals today or that I would be designing & building 3 new rings for clients. Everyday, something new...a new challenge!

If you can't tell it already, I simply love the jewelry business! The challenges that a jeweler faces everyday is so exciting....one minute I'm wearing the buyers hat and purchasing exciting jewelry for my clients and the next...well, who knows, maybe appraising, maybe ring sizing or selling a 4 carat diamond!

I say all that to say this, "Whatever you do in life, be passionate about it!" Wouldn't you hate it if your jeweler showed you the enthusiasm of a goat? How charged up would you be to let him or her make or sell you a new piece of jewelry?

Stop by today, I'm waiting for your unexpected challenge....it will make your day & mine!

Success,
